Graphite Petroleum Coke Carburizer for Casting Gray Iron

Petroleum coke is currently widely used as a carbonisation agent.
Petroleum coke is a by-product of crude oil refining. The residue and petroleum asphalt obtained from normal pressure distillation or vacuum distillation of crude oil can be used as feedstocks for the production of petroleum coke, which is then coked to obtain raw petroleum coke. Raw petroleum coke has a high impurity content and cannot be used directly as a coking agent. It must first be calcined.
There are several types of petroleum coke, including sponge, needle, granular and fluidised.

Sponge petroleum coke is obtained by the delayed coking process. Due to its high sulphur and metal content, it is usually used as a fuel during calcination and can also be used as a raw material for calcining petroleum coke. Calcined sponge coke is mainly used in the aluminium industry and as a carburising agent.

Needled petroleum coke is obtained by the delayed coking process using raw materials with high aromatic hydrocarbon content and low impurity content. This type of coke has a needle-like structure that is prone to cracking, is sometimes called graphite coke, and is mainly used in the manufacture of graphite electrodes after calcination.

Granular petroleum coke is a hard granular material obtained by the delayed coking process from raw materials with high sulphur and asphaltene content and is mainly used as a fuel.

Fluidised petroleum coke is obtained by the continuous coking process in a fluidised bed and is in the form of small particles with a non-directional structure, high sulphur content and low volatile matter.

Petcoke is calcined to remove sulphur, moisture and volatile matter. Calcination of raw petroleum coke at 1200-1350 ℃ can render it essentially pure carbon.

The largest user of calcined petroleum coke is the aluminium industry, with 70% used in the manufacture of anodes for the reduction of bauxite.
