Difference Between Semi-graphitized Petroleum Coke And Graphitized Petroleum Coke

The core difference between semi-graphitized petroleum coke and graphitized petroleum coke lies in the degree of graphitization and process parameters, which are reflected in the three aspects of carbon atom arrangement structure, impurity content, and application performance.

1. Differences in the degree of graphitization and process ‌

(1) Heat treatment temperature and time ‌

Graphitized petroleum coke needs to be treated at a high temperature of about 3000°C in a graphitization furnace to make the carbon atoms form a regular hexagonal layered structure. ‌‌

The graphitization temperature or time of semi-graphitized petroleum coke is insufficient, and some disordered carbon structure remains, which is an incompletely graphitized product.

(2)Physical structure performance ‌

Graphitized petroleum coke has a stronger metallic luster, dense texture, and uniform pores. ‌ The surface luster of semi-graphitized petroleum coke is weaker, and the pore structure is relatively loose. ‌

2. ‌ Component and performance comparison ‌

(1) Key indicator differences ‌

Sulfur content: Graphitized petroleum coke ≤ 0.05%, semi-graphitized petroleum coke can reach 0.3%-0.7%. Nitrogen content: Graphitized petroleum coke can eliminate more than 90% of nitrogen elements, and semi-graphitized petroleum coke has a higher residual content. Fixed carbon content: graphitized petroleum coke ≥ 98%, semi-graphitized petroleum coke about 93-97%.

(2) Differences in metallurgical properties

Absorption rate: The absorption rate of graphitized petroleum coke in molten steel can reach more than 95%, while semi-graphitized petroleum coke is only 75-85%.

Nucleation ability: Graphitized petroleum coke can provide a better graphite nucleation substrate for cast iron.

‌‌

3. Application scenarios and economic efficiency ‌

Graphitized petroleum coke is used for special castings such as high-end ductile iron and nuclear power valves to ensure material strength and fatigue resistance. Semi-graphitized petroleum coke is mostly used for ordinary gray iron castings, and its cost is 30-50% lower than that of graphitized petroleum coke products.
